Beginning and Intermediate Pastel Painting

Hard Pastels -small set (12) of Cretacolor sticks, Nu Pastels or Windsor Newton

Soft Patels- Sennelier hslf sticks, or Schmincke half sticks, landscape set or Terry Ludwig is a nice soft pastel

Paper- Kitty Wallis, Belgian grey or other medium colored sandpaper. Papers can be purchased from local art stores.  Recommend getting a variety of small pastel papers. Sample pack available at Dakota pastel: www.dakotapastels.com or call 1-888-345-0067.

Instructor will also have papers available for purchase for your convenience

Foam board or drawing board approx. 15"X20"
Misc. items: drawing pencil and eraser, white artist tape or clips, one large and one small old paintbrush, notebook for handouts, sketchbook, old small rags/washcloth,

Oil or Acrylic Intermediate Painting

Paint (Oil, Acrylic):

Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Light, Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Cadmium Red Light, Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Thalo or Viridian, Permanent Green Light, Large tube of Titanium White, Ivory Black

 

Brushes:

For oils and acrylics you will need a few different size filberts: one each  #10, # 8, #4 and a small rigger brush for details. A palette knife is useful for removing paint.

For watercolors a large pointed round brush, med., and small rigger brush for details, and an 11/2”-2” flat synthetic brush for covering background areas. Sable brushes are expensive, there are sable/synthetic blends and synthetics will work just fine.

 

Everyone will need:

Sketchbook, Drawing Pencils, Eraser, White Artist Tape, Personal Photographs, Paper Towels (Viva is very absorbent), Palette (Wood or Plastic)

 

Painting Surfaces:

Oil and Acrylic painters will need either stretched canvas, canvas boards, or alternative surface several sizes anywhere from 9”x12”, 11”x14”, 16”x20”.

Watercolor painters will need 140lb artist grade watercolor paper, cold press is a good all- purpose paper, either sheets or blocks.

 

Paint Thinner, Water, Turpentine

Oil painters will need Gamsol odorless mineral spirits only!  Oil painters also need a jar for washing brushes in.  Acrylic and watercolor painters will need a plastic container for water. Oil painters will need a can of retouch varnish spray.

 

 

 

Oriental Watercolor
